First Blog Post of the 2017-2018 School Year!

Hello! It’s just hard to believe that we already have a week under our belt!  It’s been exciting getting to know each other. Last week we began student of the day. So far we have learned about Jacob, Addie, and Christian. Later this week we will learn about Raeleigh, Weston, Claire, and Ava. A note comes home a few days before your students day explaining what they can bring to share. Thank you for your help with this!

You may have noticed that the planner came home on Friday.  Make sure to check this each night and initial in the green box. I will try our best to keep you updated on library return day in the planner and any upcoming events.  Books will be coming home tonight to be read.  Make sure to return them each day.

Please remember to send back the purple writing folder if you haven’t done so yet.

Reading: Our first reading unit is building good habits as readers. This week we will focus on striving to get stronger at reading by reading more and more. We will also focus on setting goals in our reading and how we can set goals at home too! We will work on rereading to smooth out our voices and tracking the words on the page with our eyes instead of our fingers.

Writing:  Our first writing unit is writing small moment stories. This week we will work on using pictures to add words to our stories.  We will also work on stretching words, listening to all sounds, recording what we hear.  It will be important for first graders to zoom in on a small moment story and work on writing with focus.  At the end of the week we will learn that writers talk to other writers about their writing and that storytelling with partners can be a helpful strategy.

Word Study: In the first unit of word study we will be reviewing the letter names, sounds, and lowercase formations of the letters a-z. We will work on this through oral repetition, using keywords, student notebooks, and dry erase boards.

Math: In math we have been working on routines and playing games to help with structuring numbers to 10.  This week we will begin unit 1: Partners and Number Patterns Through 10.  This week we will discuss numbers 1-10, visualize numbers as a 5-group and ones, partners of 2 through 5, and partners of 6.

Content:  We will continue to learn new rules and routines at school.  We have created our hopes for first grade and will work together to write rules so that we accomplish everything that we want this school year.  At the end of the week we will begin our first science unit which will be Organisms.

As always if you have any questions, let me know!
