September 25th

Hello! It seems that summer is hanging around a little longer and it's very hot in our classroom! We are hoping it cools down towards the end of the week.

Exciting news! We are picking lettuce and having our salad party tomorrow to celebrate! We will be putting new seeds in after. We are excited to compare how different plants grow in the machine.

I'm sorry for the confusion of dress up days but as a school we decided to change them to match the district homecoming days. See the schedule before for the new dress up days.

Reading: This week for reading we will learn strategies to solve unknown words. We will learn how readers use meaning to solve unknown words, try different vowel sounds to solve a word, and double check that when they think they solved a word that it looks right to their eyes and makes sense to them. We will also learn how readers do not give up on a tough word. They try multiple strategies to solve an unknown word. We will end the week strengthening our reading partnerships. Partners will learn how to introduce a book to their partner that they want to read together.

Writing:  This week in writing we will continue writing narrative small moment stories, focusing on setting goals for ourselves in our writing. We are going to create a checklist of goals we want to reach in our writing. After we create the checklist we will add student examples that show someone that has reached a goal. Then we will pick a goal for ourselves and display our goal in the room!

Word Study: This week for word study we will be sending home a packet of how we form each letter and packet of practice sheets. This is being sent home to show what we have been working on in unit 1 so far! This is not homework. It is only extra practice and to show you what we have been learning in word study. This week we will continue reviewing the letter names, sounds, and lowercase formations of the letters a-z. We will work on this through oral repetition, using keywords, student notebooks, and dry erase boards.

Math: This week we will be finishing up Unit 1 for math. We will practice partners of 10, review the partners for 5-9, and apply this knowledge to real life examples. We will have our assessment for Unit 1 on Thursday.

Content: This week in science we will continue investigating woodland plants and freshwater plants. We will be picking our lettuce! We will also check in on the seeds that we are growing in our classroom.

As always if you have any questions, let me know!
