January 29th

Hello,

It was fun to celebrate NDLC last week! Students had fun meeting with their third grade buddies, dressing up, and celebrating our school.

This week we will be working on a class Valentine project. Our class is a part of a project with 23 first grade classes around the United States. Each student will design a heart valentine to be sent to one of the schools. We will also write a letter about our school to include with the heart. In return we should receive 23 valentines and letters. It should be a fun to start receiving mail!

Speaking of Valentine's Day...We do have a class party and exchange Valentines. I will send the sign up and class list next Monday.

Upcoming Events:
February 14th: Valentine’s Day, wear red or pink
February 16th: Funky Friday
February 22nd/23rd: No School
February 27th: Family Night: Music and Munchies

Reading: We are beginning a new reading unit this week called Readers Have Big Jobs to Do.  This week we will teach students that when readers take charge of their reading, they stop at the first sign of trouble and then try something to solve the problem.  We will focus on trying to use more than one strategy when stuck and asking ourselves, Does it make sense? Does that look right? And Does that sound right? At the end of the week we will set goals for ourselves and ask our partners to help us when it gets tough.

Writing: We are finishing up writing reviews about our favorite places, toys, and movies.  We are going make anthologies with our finished pieces.  We will continue our opinion writing unit with writing reviews of our favorite books.

Word Study: We are starting Unit 7 this week. Today I introduced the glued sounds -ang, -ung, -ing, -ong. We will work more with these sounds throughout the week.

Math: This week in math we are continuing to learn about adding and comparing 2-digit numbers. We are going to learn the Count On strategy and how sometimes you need to group a new decade when you add them together. We will also compare two digit numbers and use our greater than and less than symbols to do so. At the end of the week we will have our Unit 4 practice test.

Content: This week we will focus on the earths revolution and tilt. We will talk about how that effects the seasons.

Let me know if you have any questions
