January 2nd

Hello!

I hope you had a wonderful winter break and that everyone found time to relax and enjoy family. I had a very exciting break...I got engaged! Zach and I spent most of the week celebrating with family and friends. Let the wedding planning begin! It was a lot of fun sharing the news with the kids this morning.

January 2nd: Classes Resume
January 19th: ½ Day for Students and Yearbook Orders due
January 22nd: No School for Students
January 23rd: Art Family Night
January 25th: Jump Rope for Heart Family Night

Reading: We are beginning to a new fiction reading unit.  We will be getting to know the characters in our books like we get to know our friends.  This week we will focus on sneak peeks and thinking “What does this tell me about the characters? How might the story go?”  We will also check our thinking while reading by saying to ourselves “At first I was thinking but now I’m thinking…” We will also look at how characters feeling changes throughout the book.

Writing:  Today we did some writing about our break! Tomorrow we will begin our new Opinion Unit.  In the first couple of weeks of this unit we write about collections.  We rank our favorite things and give our opinions.  A letter is coming home today asking you to help your first grader find a collection at home.  Please send it in by Friday. Thank you!
Word Study: This week in word study we are starting Unit 6. In this unit we will introduce the concept of baseword and suffix in a very simple way, with just adding the suffix -s. New trick words this week: are and were.

Math: This week in math we will be starting Unit 4: Place Value Concepts. In the first few lessons students are learning about the tens place and exploring teen numbers. We will be creating/representing teen numbers, introducing ten groupings, and looking at teen addition strategies.

Content: This week we will focus on the size and distance relationship between the earth and the sun.  We will make Sun bracelets. We will also look at the diameter of the sun and make comparisons.

Let me know if you have any questions.
