New Directions Week Update

Happy New Directions Week!  It’s a fun week to celebrate what makes our school a great place to BE!  Make sure to check out the dress up days and I hope that you are able to make it to one or both of our families nights this week.

I am working on my National Board Certification for Early Childhood Education.  As a part of the work that I am doing I will need to collect samples of student work and videotape parts of my teaching. No student last names will appear on the work that I submit. I will be sending home a release form tomorrow (Tuesday) and I would appreciate it if you could sign it and return it to school. Thank you!

Upcoming Events:
January 23rd: Art Family Night
January 25th: Jump Rope for Heart Family Night

Reading: This week we will be meeting with our book clubs and getting to know our characters.  We will act out our books and work on changing our voice to match the book. At the end of the week we will celebrate our unit by performing our books for each other.  They are looking forward to making some props to match their books.

Writing: Wow! We sure do have an opinionated class!  We are working on adding details to our opinion writing.  We are comparing our favorite places and toys.  We are also working on adding using a convincing voice in our writing.  This week we will also add introductions and collections.
Word Study: This week we will finish up Unit 6.  We have been working on adding the suffix -s to words when they are plural or at the end of an action word.

Math: We will work more with two digit numbers this week.  We will compare two digits using the less than, greater than, or equal to sign.  We will also add one digit numbers and two digit numbers. Students are encouraged to draw tens sticks and ones as a visual to help them with these equations.

Content: This week we will focus on how long it takes the earth to circle the sun. We will make a calendar and look at the four seasons.  We will also do a close reading.  We have been doing these more often which means we look closely at a text as a class, we turn and talk about the information and text features, and then students independently construct a written response to book.  Our book this week will be The Ox Cart Man.

Let me know if you have any questions.
