Feb. 26th-March 2nd

Hello,
How is it possible that this week is already going to be March?!? I hope that everyone enjoyed their break! On Friday we will celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday with some special activities. It is also a favorite book character dress up day.

February 27th: Family Night: Music and Munchies
March 2nd: Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character
March 5th: Culver’s Night for PSC 5-8
March 9th: Half Day
March 16th: Wear Green

Reading: This week in reading we are continuing to learn how readers have big jobs to do! We are learning strategies to understand the stories we are reading by visualizing, keeping track of who’s talking, and understanding words. We will also learn that if we get confused or cannot remember our story, we need to go back reread to understand our story. When your child is reading at home a quick way to make sure they are understanding their book is to ask for a retell. A retell is where the student will tell you the characters in the story and some things that happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story!

Writing: We are working in a poem unit.  Each day we are focusing on different kinds of poems.  We will look at poems that use imagery, sense words, poems about everyday objects, songs, and poems with rhythm. The students are having fun in this inquiry unit.  At the end of the unti we hope to publish our best pieces.

Word Study: This week we are finishing up working with -ank, -ink, -onk, and -unk. We will have our test at the end of the week.

Math: This week we are looking for patterns in the 100 grid. We are doing equations adding and subtracting multiples of 10. Examples would be 67+30 or 80-50. It is ok if they still need to use the 100 grid to help them but they should start to notice patterns and find strategies that can help them.

Content: This week we will begin our short mini-unit on American Symbols.  We will spend time learning about the Flag, White House, Liberty Bell, and Statue of Liberty this week.

Let me know if you have any questions.
