February 13th

Hello!  I'm sorry for the delay in the blog, I was out of town yesterday for a family funeral.  I'm sad that I missed the 100th day because it sounds like they had a lot of fun.  I am proud of how much they have all grown so far in 1st grade!

Remember to bring in Valentine's tomorrow.  Thank you to everyone who responded with treats.  It should be a fun party :)

Upcoming Events:
February 14th: Valentine’s Day, wear red or pink
February 16th: Funky Friday
February 22nd/23rd: No School
February 27th: Family Night: Music and Munchies

Reading: This week we are adding more tools to our toolbox to help us solve some harder words we are coming across in our books! This is a very busy and important time of the year for your child’s reading. Thank you for continuing to work with them on their reading at home!

Writing: We are starting our poetry unit this week.  We will have some inquiry lessons where we read many different poems and notice how they are all different.  We will also create lists of all the things that are close to our hearts so we many different ideas.  We will talk about feeling words and look at line breaks.

Word Study: We are continuing with unit 7. In this unit we learn a lot of new ‘glued’ sounds: /ang/, /ing/, /ong/, /ung/, /ank/, /ink/, /onk/, and /unk/.

Math: This week in math we started with some 100 day math activities! For the rest of the week we are continuing with Unit 5. We are learning about subtraction in the teens and unknown partners with teen equations. Homework will be sent home on Wednesday.

Content: We are studying the Olympics in our content time.  Each classroom is studying a different country and watching their medal count.  We are cheering for Germany...and of course the US! We will also be having our Valentine party on Wednesday.

Let me know if you have any questions.
