Reading: This week in reading we will work on rereading our books to notice new things and notice how the pages go together. We will also set goals based on the skills we have learned in the first part of our unit. We will begin to study the characters that our in our books and learn more about the main characters in the book and their relationships with other characters.

Writing: In writing we are creating the characters that we are going to be writing adventures about. We brainstormed ideas about our fiction character such as what color hair they have, their hobbies, their family, favorite foods, etc. Then, today we built our characters on Popsicle sticks out of art supplies. In the coming days we will create scenes for our characters. We will use these puppets as we begin writing to help students with rehearsal and editing. Ask your first grader to tell you about the friend that they created!

Word Study: I am sending home a unit 8 packet today. Starting today I will be sending home 5 trick words for students to study throughout the week. You can practice writing them at home. These are words that do not follow any rules and should be spelled correctly in their writing. On Friday we will test the spelling of the words. This weeks words are: you, said, was, of, have

Math: This week in math we are looking at data and making comparisons. We are beginning the week by surveying each other and displaying our data. We will begin to look at the easiest way to compare two and three sets of data. Students will be encouraged to use words such as greater than, less than, fewer, and greater. We will also be using our stair step math tools to represent our data.

Science: This week we will begin our unit about the properties of light and sound. In our first lesson, your child will learn that not only are the characters in an animated movie created by artists, but so are all the sounds! There’s such a thing as “sound effect artists.” These artists make use of many different objects in order to make sounds such as rain, wind, thunder, robot voices, and more. Often they do this by creating vibrations, a back-and-forth movement. (There’s a scientific idea we’re laying the groundwork for: that vibrations and sounds are fundamentally connected.) You can continue to foster your child’s curiosity by sitting down together and watching this short video about some of the famous sound effects artists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSf8Er2gV_Q

Let me know if you have any questions!
